Chinese yuan becomes 4th most used world payment

The Chinese yuan has now become the fourth most used payment currency worldwide.

According to global transactions organization SWIFT, the renminbi held a 2.79% share in world payments based on value in August, overtaking the Japanese yen standing at 2.76%.

In August 2012, the Chinese yuan ranked 12th with a share of just 0.84%. SWIFT says that the yuan has also further established itself as the dominant currency for trade finance behind the dollar.

Meanwhile, the People's Bank of China launched a Chinese International Payment System on Thursday in Shanghai, which provides domestic and foreign financing institutions with capital settlement services for renminbi offshore and cross-border business.

On the same day, People's Bank of China announced the country would conform to the International Monetary Fund’s statistical system, which is expected to facilitate successful RMB internationalization and improve transparency.

However, China's foreign reserve decreased for a 5th consecutive month, while the recent yuan depreciation is also of concern. But these worries have been dismissed by Chinese top leaders.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal last month that there is no basis for sustained depreciation of the RMB, given the current economic and financial conditions at home and abroad.

Despite uncertainty, analysts say that the rapid growth of RMB globalization is expected to continue, especially through strategic initiatives such as the “Belt and Road” projects and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

국제 은행 간 통신협회(SWIFT)는 6일(현지시간) 전 세계 결제시장에서 위안화가 차지하는 비중이 8월 기준 사상 최고인 2.79%로 7월 2.34%에서 0.45% 포인트 높아졌다고 밝혔다. 위안화는 이로써 엔화(2.76%)를 제치고 미국 달러화(44.8%), 유로화(27.2%), 영국 파운드화(8.5%)에 이어 국제결제 비중이 높은 통화의 위치에 올랐다. SWIFT는 “해외 투자자와 글로벌 기업들이 위안화 사용을 계속해서 늘리고 있고, 특히 8월 위안화 절하 국면에서 해외 수입기업들의 위안화 결제가 폭증했다”고 밝혔다.

위안화가 국제결제시장에서 국제통화기금(IMF) 특별인출권(SDR) 구성통화 중 하나인 엔화의 비중을 초과한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 이에 따라 위안화의 SDR 편입도 탄력을 받을 전망이다. IMF는 5년에 한번씩 SDR 구성통화를 변경하고 있으며 2010년에 이어 올 11월 위안화의 SDR 편입 여부를 결정한다.

2012년 8월까지만 해도 위안화는 SWIFT 결제 비중이 0.84%로 12위에 머물렀으나 지난 3년간 꾸준히 결제량이 늘면서 캐나다달러, 호주달러 등 7개국의 통화를 추월했다. 특히 세계 무역에서 중국이 차지하는 비중이 커지면서 위안화는 세계 신용장 발행액의 9.1%를 차지해 이 분야에서 달러 다음의 지위를 차지하고 있다. 위안화를 취급하는 은행은 전 세계적으로 1134개(36%)나 된다.
